I’ve been working here in Rome, Italy, for almost 30 years. Before I came here, I was a registered nurse in the Philippines from 1986 to 1989. I also worked as a nurse in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. My sister, who’s in Rome, told me that there was a better opportunity for me in Europe, so I hopped in.
I started working as a caregiver for an elder, but my dream was to get a job in the hospital. However, I couldn’t work there yet because I must first take a one-year course to secure a nursing license in Rome. The elder I was taking care of knew about it, so she allowed me to take part-time jobs to support my dream. I failed the first exam but acquired my license in the second try.
Toiling multiple jobs was manageable but being far from my family challenged me the most. I had no choice but to stay in Rome because I want my children to finish college. That, plus the stress I experience at work, always tortured me. Nevertheless, my inspiration is that someday, I’ll be home with my family and make up the time we’ve missed.
Being all by myself in Rome, I learned that taking care of my health is important. Working hard every day at my age, my legs began to get weak and it held me back from performing my duties like before.
